Winter in Lanz – best cheap, pleasant, warm, cultural places?

Asked by: 18th May 2011

I’m 50 – so no drunk yobs! I’m an artist, intelligent, quiet, like cultural things, but also a cinema, nice cafes, harbours, pleasant people. Any suggestions for a good place to spent a warm winter, for about 5-6 months I’d say. I’ll probably rent a long-term studio apartment.

    Hi Terry
you’ll find the term ‘long term rent’ with the eastate agents in Lanzarote usually applies to a year – yo might be lucky and get a 6 month period though, suggest you try the on line Gazette for private rents

    Thanks Karen,
What is the “online gazette” ?
I’ve looked at PdC… That seems to be the probable place for me.
Well, I’ll look online and see if anyone wants to rent for 6 months.

If you google ‘gazette lanzarote’ the magazine will come up. It is a monthly free mag which can be picked up all over the island. Lots of info in there. One word of caution – PDC is very touristy. You may prefer a different location judging by your description of yourself.

www.gazettelive.com – classifieds then property for rent – good luck

Agree with Kitty – PDC – a bit lively – Costa Teguise or inland more tranquil

Thanks ladies. I’m not a hermit, I do like a bit of life, just not hordes of drunken yobs fighting and puking! Seemed PdC was a bit more mature than that. CT looks good too.

I appreciate your help… by the way, is there an English-language cinema over there?

I can’t stand another freezing cold British winter. I won’t come until October, then through to April. I’ll look more seriously nearer the time. I have my own work to bring in with me thankfully. Still, we’ll see how it goes, one day at a time.

CT is nice, you may like Puerto Calero too, its a small seafront village with a marina and promenade with cafes, shops etc. its a little more upmarket and quieter if that suits you.

Long term rent starts from a period of 3 months or more and you can expect a much better rent than weekly holiday rentals, the longer the stay the better discount on the price to about 50% of the weekly rate. You will be expected to pay a month’s deposit but this is returned at the end of the contract.

There is a small cinema (Secret Cinema) that show films in English they are in the old capital Teguise which I think you will enjoy, We often rent our 1 bedroom apartment in Puerto del Carmen to singles or couples looking for a holiday for 3-6 months in the winter. This resort isn’t just about clubs and yobs there is much more to Puerto del Carmen such as the lovely old harbour area, the walks you can do along the coastline to Puerto Calero and beyond. The plus about staying in a resort is that it increases the possibility of meeting other like minded people and making new friends who speak your language.

I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for in Lanzarote.

Hi Jules, thanks very much for all that additional info on Lanzarote. I will go and google some of those places you suggested. I think I’m leaning towards PdC, but I’ll probably just fly out and take a look around before I commit to a long stay rental.

Terry – lean the other way…….! I met my husband in PdC 25 years ago!! It was lovely then but we revisited this Feb and didnt recognise the place. If what you want, and I know some do, rows of english bars, mexican bars, mcdonalds (?!), and more bars and if you would like to be in with a high chance of observing puking, then PdC is the place for you : )
We went to Playa Blanca this Feb which was lovely but we are heading for costa teguise next year as I think it will be the right mix of everything.
Lanzarote is a beautiful island but sadly PdC has lost its charm.

Thanks Sue, that’s a good comment.
I will certainly check out Costa Teguise. Looking at the pictures on google, it seems about the right size. And if I want a bit of fightin’ and pukin’ I can always head off to PdC!
