Why do so many planes go around ?

Asked by: 27th August 2015 ,

During the last 26 days, we saw 11 flights ‘go around’ at Arrecife airport, including a BA jet make three attempts to land. And no, it wasn’t windy on any occasion. Any ideas?

If landing on the southern runway it’s quite a sharp turn to the right to ‘double back’ north. This has to be done sharply in order not to run into the flightpath of aircraft from/to Fuerteventura. If the approach/line up to the runway isn’t 100% straight away, the pilot doesn’t have time to make amendments to his/her flight path, and it is safer to ‘go around’ and try again.
