The Old Airport ?

Asked by: 18th March 2012

Anyone visiting the site remember the very old airport with the green & white sash drapes that ran along the ceiling ? The place was so small that on your return trip home the check in que would snake out of the airport doors and youd looking at a 2 hour period before you got rid of your luggage  !

If your a newbie visitor to the island and the new airport, you just dont know how lucky you are !.. The old airport was quite an experience. Anyone remember it or am i on my own ?

I remember it Paul, infact we were on the last flight that left the old airport terminal before it closed for good. We have stood in many a queue there and nearly roasted alive as there was no air con
or seating to speak of. The new terminal certainly is a big improvement.

I remember the old airport – it ws 1985 and before boarding the plane with my friends I gave my phone number to a scottish guy I met. We have now been married 22 years!!

    Hi Paul

I remember it well. Not only did the queues snake out of the building but there used to be two lines of people for each check in desk most of the time. The arrival of air con in the new building was bliss …….as Tracy says, it felt like you were being boiled alive. Does anyone else remember when they used to take your bags off the plane and you would pick them up off the tarmac? Oh happy days.

    Hiya Kitty ..

I do remember the Tarmac baggage collection yes. ! In a strange way , i do have fond memories of the old airport but i think its only because it was what greeted me the very first time i visited the island so i guess im a little bit nostalgic in my thoughts… Am i right in thinking that there was a small kind of outside cafe area as well, once you went through to departures ? Theres still outside tables and chairs in the new airport, but the old one was very small..
And both yourself and Tracy have mentioned about getting cooked whilst waiting in the que to check in ,, Not good if your already sore !

Sorry Paul….. It was the Scottish accent..!

  7. Paul D on Mar 19, 2012

Your seriously telling me that it was only his accent ? His bagpipes and sexy kilt had no further influence on your choice of man to marry then ? Damn !

Yeah, there was a small outside area but I don’t think many people knew it was there as it never seemed crowded and you could always get a seat.

It was an area where you could grab a last bit of sunshine before you got on your plane home. !

Haha – guess so! We went back to pdc last year and it’s changed so much we couldn’t work it out. We met in the waiki bar but it’s not there now. Prefer PBS now – gorgeous!

I remember the drive from the airport to pdc used to be one road with no buildings anywhere . The only cars to rent were fiat pandas…. All driving across wasteland to papagayo beach….. But tho it’s really changed its still one of my most fave places.

I remember the old airport well. I lived in Lanzarote in the early 90’s so yes. Baggage belt kept breaking down and there was only 1 ever in use lol
