Did everyone know that Spain and Canaries are in the process of phasing out Travellers Cheques ?

Asked by: 16th May 2012

I was on PDC in March and had great difficulty exchanging euro Travellers Cheques and banks explained to me they would be phased out this year. Returning again in November to PDC.

    Hi May
yes this is very much the case and it is not just Spian many other places world wide are not accepting travellers cheques, Many reasons for not accepting them now one is a large number of counterfeit cheques
also they say now that there are a lot of ATM machines around so people can get cash more easy and I understand at better exchange rates
some Bureaux de Change will take them, Also if you have a bank account for example with Santander will cash them but dont take that as certain
    I hope this helps

Thanks for your reply Steve p. I guess I am a bit older and have used Travellers cheques for years alongside using the atms. However I believe this has not been widely advertised and should really be informed to tourist trying to get T C at Thomas Cook tc.

    Travellers cheques – how quaint!

I’ve honestly never used a travellers cheque in my life (I’m 31). It’s not surprising they’re being phased out – in this day and age they are an anachronism. There are so many other ways of taking/getting access to your money abroad.

I last used them way back in the 90s when I was in the US.

With so many ATMs now days it is so easy to get cash unlike 10 to 15 years ago

I have had a £50 one left over from a holiday 10 years ago and I always take it as “emergency” money. Think I’ll just frame it, may be worth more as an antique in a few years

Now days you can get a visa or mastercard pre loaded with cash which is a lot safer that taking cash or even travelers cheques and you can use them any where that takes Visa or Mastercard
