the currrent paper residencia is valid for ten years, you go to the police station, near the harbour in arrecife ask to apply for residencia, they will give you the forms to take away and fill in and an appointment to return to collect the residencia, one of the forms is to take to the bank, you pay 10 euro and take this and the other completed forms along with a copy of your passport back with you on your appt date.
very few of the staff there speak any english so if your spanish is not good take an interpreter with you. good luck

Thanks Jude. I thought it may be for five years which runs out next year. We have a few more years before we need to worry about applying to renew now. Thanks for your help

if it’s the a4 paper style one you have no worries but the old style card is only valid for 5 years just to clarify, but if you have that one it would have the expiry date on anyway! hopefully its the paper one so it saves you a trip lol !

Hi Jude and Sue, I got an A4 paper residencia earlier this year and was told I would need to renew it after 5 years. I’ve just seen an article in a property magazine that says the same thing. I’ve tried to look on the internet to get a definite answer but I can’t find anything. Sorry to throw a spanner in the works – hopefully I was told wrong as I note that the paper form has no expiry date on it.

just picked mine up on friday and the lady clearly stated it was valid for ten years, i asked her to repeat that just in case i’d misheard but it was definitely ten, she also said they are only valid when presented with a current passport! as they are not an alternative form of identityas they have no photo or thumbprint on them ilke the last ones, she did say there are plans to change back to the card form but she couldnt say when and the current one would still be valid anyway. hope that helps xx ( it’s a minefield here when it comes to paperwork!! lol )

Thanks Jude. As you’ve collected yours more recently than me I think we can safely go with what you’ve been told. I agree – it really is a minefield!
