Do beware if you use the Asian tobacco shops as the rate advertised outside is not always the rate they give you. Once you have handed over your sterling they will say that the rate advertised outside the shop is if you change travellers cheques etc. Always agree before you hand over any money how many euros you will get in return. Have a great holiday.

I have never had any problems with the tobacco shops the only thing i have notice there best rate sometimes only applies when you change £100 or more, also they use a calculator and show you before the rate they are giving you

We had problems in Feb 2011 in both the Asian shops on Avenida Jablillo and were changing £100 each time. The first time the rate outside showed 1.16 so we should have got 116 euros but they gave us 110. When challenged about the difference the shopkeeper gave us the other 6 euro which he had in his hand. It was quite clear he was trying to rip us off. In the second shop the rate advertised was 1.16 = £1 we handed the £100 over and were given 110 euros when we pointed to the sign we were told that was the rate for changing dollar travellers cheques ?? we disagreed with him but there was no way he was handing over the other 6 euro. Friends of ours also went around this time and the same happened to them. They asked for their sterling back only for the shopkeeper to rip it in half before handing it back to them. Maybe now these shops have cleaned up their act.

    Hi Tracy

Just arrived back from CT the Asian tobacco and spirit shop oppsite the side of the Teguise Playa hotel now has a small sticker added to his sign ,TC before the rates of exchange, which was never there before , I take it the TC will be travelers cheques. He must have got the message.
