Nick, you will not have any problems at all. the foreign office does state that your passsport must still be in date for your return travel. and it is best that you have a little bit more available time left before it expires just in case of unknown delays on your return. here is a paste from there web site:-
    Entry Requirements – Passport validity

Your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required. However, it is always sensible to have a short period of extra validity on your passport in case of any unforeseen delays to your departure. You do not have to wait until your old passport expires to apply to renew it. Any time left on your old passport when you apply will be added to your new passport, up to a maximum of nine months.

also here is there web address so you can see more:-

    thanks

I’m gonna sound really miserable now…

I seriously hope you don’t have an accident requiring hospitalisation. I’d always have a few months on the passport and I’d recommend others to have it too.

Have a great time all the same….. 😉
